In years past we were told that all fats were bad and to avoid them (remember the fat-free 90s as every product scrambled to remove all traces of fat?) But then in the last decade we were able to understand that only some fats are bad, while others positively affect cholesterol and nutrient adsorption as well as being beneficial to those that are dieting. The result is a large amount of options at your local grocery store as well as questions each of us has as to which oil we should use?

Why have Oil (fats)

Contrary to popular belief, when the right types of fats are consumed, fat is actually a valuable part of one's diet, allowing people to absorb nutrients that require fat in order to metabolize as well as requiring a longer time for the body to digest, keeping you satiated longer. Natural fats contain varying ratios of three types of fats: saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated.

  • Saturated fats are hard at room temperature. They're stable, resist oxidation, and are found primarily in meat, dairy, palm and coconut oil.
  • Polyunsaturated fats are liquid at room temperature and the least stable. They oxidize easily and are found in seafood, corn, safflower, soybean, and sunflower oils.
  • Monounsaturated fats are more stable than polyunsaturated fats. They're found in canola, nut and olive oils.

It is recommended to limit saturated fats in the diet due to their association with cardiovascular disease. Also, you should try to rely more on monounsaturated than polyunsaturated fats, though polyunsaturated should not be avoided due to their source for essential fats Omega-6 and Omega-3. These are fats your body needs but cannot produce by itself that play a crucial role in brain function and the growth and development of your body.
